A number of vehicles surrounding the harbour and crews appeared ready to act.

But investigation into the matter suggests it was a fake call.

A spokesman said: "Kent Police was called to a report that a woman had fallen into the sea near The Stade, Folkestone at 4.25pm.

"Officers attended along with HM Coastguard and South East Coast Ambulance Service and, following inquiries, it is believed the call was a hoax."
