Albanian tourist rescued off Folkestone after drifting out to sea twice in two days

An Albanian man visiting Kent on holiday had to be rescued two days running after drifting out to sea - on an airbed.

Rescuers were called out at around 3pm yesterday to help the man who had drifted "some distance" off Folkestone Warren.

The man was carried out to sea by the tide and was having difficulty paddling back to the shore.

They soon realised it was the same person who had been blown onto rocks on an airbed the day before.

It was originally believed that the man was an illegal immigrant but the Home Office has since confirmed that he is an Albanian national on holiday in the UK.

"He had been blown onto rocks the previous day" - Folkestone Rescue spokesman

A Folkestone Rescue spokesman said: "Our assistance was requested by Dover Coastguard who were concerned about a person adrift on a small inflatable craft some distance off Folkestone Warren.

"Rescue one was launched immediately to recover and assist the person, and we were informed that Dover RNLI and Kent Police were on their way.

"On Rescue one's arrival, it was discovered that the person was actually the same individual with an inflatable mattress who had been blown onto rocks the previous day."

Once back on the shore the man was handed over to Kent Police who have him "further advice" before releasing him.
