We found ‘Kent’s best bacon sandwich’ at The Dog House in Sandgate, near Folkestone

In a world where you can sit down for a breakfast burrito, eggs benedict or huevos rancheros for your first meal of the day, some of us like to stick with the classics.

And, in my opinion, there is no better way to kickstart a long day, a chilled weekend or a recovery from a long session the night before than the humble bacon sandwich – with lashings of brown sauce.

So when I heard about a cafe that serves up one of the best – with crispy rashers and extra thick slices of bread – I was determined to try it out.

Sandgate is a small village near Folkestone and far less busy than the town’s hugely popular harbour arm.

If you need a reason to explore the tranquil seafront spot, look no further than The Dog House.

The cafe in the village’s high street cannot be missed with its bright pink sign and green exterior.

There are only five tables inside, so it is clear why booking is advisable.

But I manage to grab the last one and then take in my surroundings.

The walls are covered in pastel colours, quirky seaside-themed decorations and other quirky items, like teapots and various shaped mirrors, and The Beatles are being played on repeat.

I start browsing the menu but I cannot spot a bacon sandwich. Thankfully my server reassures me they do one.

I also order an Americano and orange juice to wash it down, which all comes to £7.50.

While I wait for my breakfast to arrive, I realise a lot of the customers here are regulars.

But I am made to feel very welcome by the staff and do not feel out of place at all.

The cafe is also dog-friendly – hence its name – and I am greeted by a black pooch sitting on the stairs on the way to the toilet, which I assume belongs to the owners.

I also spot a dog sitting in a pushchair being fed smoked salmon by a customer from his plate.

After about 15 minutes, my meal is served and it truly is a thing of beauty.

It has thick slices of bread covered in golden, melted butter which is seeping out onto the crusts.

Taking my first bite, I notice there are plenty of crispy rashers in the sandwich which is covered in brown sauce – the only acceptable condiment for this breakfast.

The thicker slices of bread hold it all together and stop it from going soggy.

The sandwich is hearty and probably the best one I have ever had.

Within minutes, I devour it and I am left feeling pretty full, which is probably down to the thick slices of bread.

Just a few minutes from the cafe is the stunning coastline, which is much less busy than the likes of Whitstable and Margate.

So I have a gentle walk along the promenade to burn off a few of those tasty calories I have just gobbled.

Although for some, the journey might be a bit off the beaten track, I would definitely set aside the time to visit the Dog House for a masterclass on how to make a great bacon sandwich.

I promise you will not be disappointed.
