Presenter Janet Street-Porter donates Louis Vuitton handbag to campaigners blocking lorry park plans

A TV presenter has backed a campaign to stop the building of what has been called the world’s largest lorry park.

Loose Women star Janet Street-Porter is supporting the SOS Kent group, which is campaigning to stop 250 acres of land between Stanford and Sellindge being used for the park.

The action group, which was set up in December 2015, says the park would be almost twice the size of the Disneyland Resort in California.

It would provide space for 3,600 trucks.

The government gave permission for the £250 million park to be built as a solution to Operation Stack after a series of delays in the summer of 2015.

The M20 was gridlocked due to French strikes by former MyFerryLink workers, which had a knock-on effect on lorry drivers crossing the Channel along with thousands of motorists. Operation Stack has not been enforced since.

The columnist and ITV Loose Women star, is donating a designer Louis Vuitton handbag to an SOS Kent barn dance on Saturday, February 4, at 6pm.

It will be auctioned off to the highest bidder at Westenhanger Castle.

Stanford Parish Council is involved in a judicial review that has been launched against the Department for Transport to prevent the lorry park from being started.

SOS Kent is raising funds towards that legal challenge, with a total of £15,500 so far. A further £19,500 is needed for “associated costs”, the group said.

Stanford Parish Council chairman Matthew Webb said: “Work on the lorry park is currently suspended while the judicial review is in progress, which has been granted by the courts.

“A date has not yet been set and our legal team say that it could be months before a court hearing is held.

“We feel it is essential for us to maintain our momentum of opposition to this wasteful folly and to continue fundraising towards any costs.”

The evening at the castle will include a scarecrow competition and traditional games for children.

Live music will be played by Rejigged with a barn dancing caller.

Items to be auctioned include the handbag, a The Lighthouse Family CD, a flight in a Tiger Moth and a hot air balloon flight.

The auction, which aims to raise thousands of pounds, will be held by auctioneer Clive Emson.
