Neil Cugley admitted Margate were the better side in Monday's 1-1 Bostik Premier draw at the Fullicks Stadium.
With neither Dulwich Hamlet nor Billericay playing Invicta could have gone top with a win but they needed Ade Yusuff's 78th minute penalty to earn them a point after Frannie Collin's spectacular volley had put Margate in front 13 minutes earlier.
Invicta boss Cugley, whose side remain third, admitted his players had not done themselves justice in front of a crowd of 946 at the Fullicks Stadium.
He added: "I thought, to be fair, they (Margate) deserved to win it, I just felt we didn't really get to the standard we've set ourselves, we're better than that.
"We didn't play as much football as we should, we're a good footballing side, we move people around but I think apprehension came into a bit in the first half.
"I thought we looked a bit nervy first half and they're a very experienced side, I thought their back four were very good.
"We didn't move them around enough and that was disappointing but give them their due, the players came out second half and looked a bit better."
Invicta's goal came from the spot after Gate defender Tom Wynter had been sent off for handling Kieron McCann's goalbound shot.
Cugley added: "The one thing about us is that we have got forwards that can pop up and make things happen, and Ade (Yusuff) who's had a really quiet game suddenly turned Friendy (Margate centre half Liam Friend) and we finished up getting a penalty and he slotted it home, you always think we've got a goal in us."
