The car then attempts to reverse out of the garden as officers, who were close behind in their own car, jump out and approach the car.

Before they get there the driver managed to speed off, smashing another fence on the way.

Sharon Scott, who lives at the damaged property, said her garden is now destroyed.

"I was in the house and could hear the cars going up the alleyway in the wrong direction, which is what alarmed me.

"Then there was a loud noise as they ploughed into the garden."

Mrs Scott's daughter Lou Smith took to Facebook to share the footage.

She said: "Thankfully no one was hurt. Just a lot of damage to my mums poor beloved garden.

"Upon reflection we are so thankful we was not there visiting because my children often play in the garden and we do like to sit in garden."

Police spokesman Andy Saunders said: "At around 8.15pm on Sunday a Volkswagen Golf failed to stop when requested to do so by police in the Gravesend area.

"A short time later the vehicle collided with fencing in Perry Street, before the driver left the scene on foot.

"Officers carried out a thorough search of the local area, with assistance from the police helicopter.

"The driver was not located and remains outstanding."

A GoFundMe page has also been set up in the aftermath of the damage to repair Mrs Scott's garden.

The family are hoping to raise £1,500.

In December last year Mrs Scott's home was also targeted by thieves and she has had a long standing run-in with neighbours Papa John's Pizza.
