Ebbsfleet completed a phenomenal comeback to win 3-2 on the road at a damp and windy Chelmsford City.

Two goals from Ashley Carew (pictured) and a Derek Duncan free kick saw Fleet take all three points in the promotion six-pointer after falling 2-0 behind.

The second v third place clash almost didn't go ahead after a 2pm pitch inspection was called following heavy overnight rain. Players from both sides were forced to warm-up across the road on a local park as the referee kept them off the Melbourne Park pitch until kick-off.

When the game eventually got under way it was the home side who looked to have adapted better to the conditions. Striker Wayne Gray put the Clarets a goal ahead after just four minutes when he poked home Ben Nunn's through ball.

Gray then doubled the advantage on 20 minutes with a stunning volley. Former Fleet man John Martin rolled the ball across and Gray struck a volley over Preston Edwards into the roof of the net.

Derek Duncan then kick-started the Fleet comeback with a left-footed free kick on 27 minutes. Chelmsford keeper James Pullen had no chance of stopping the well placed set piece.

On 53 minutes, the game turned on its head when Callum Willock was brought down in the area by Sami El-Abd. The defender was sent off for a professional foul and Ashley Carew converted the penalty kick to make it 2-2.

With 12 minutes left on the clock, Carew pounced again to seal a memorable win for the visitors. Picking up the ball on the right hand side of the area, he drilled his effort past Pullen.

Manager Liam Daish was understandably delighted at the final whistle.

He said: "To come back against third in the league after being 2-0 down away from home, I can't ask for any more than that from my players.

"It was a difficult build-up for us and it's a hard place to come, but we dealt with it well. If the lads can pull off a performance like this in these circumstances, then they can handle anything in the run-in this season."
