Gravesend cinematographer reveals all about film Sideshow starring Les Dennis, Skins actress April Pearson, Nathan Clarke and Anthony Head

A Kent cinematographer has revealed all about his new British comedy starring Les Dennis.

Ex-Gravesend Grammar School pupil Stephen Brand is the mastermind behind all things imagery and cameras in his new film Sideshow.

The crew started filming in January 2019 in Bristol and had wrapped up production by March 2020 but, due to the pandemic, its release has been postponed on more than one occasion.

Stephen, who grew up in Gravesend, said: "Because of lockdown, 2020 was a write-off and a lot of films that are being released have been shot a number of years ago.

"It was really frustrating just thinking 'is this film ever going to get out'.

"We are looking to do some more."

The film follows two criminals who get much more than they bargain for after breaking into the home of a washed-up psychic, played by Les Dennis. The All-Seeing Stupendo is a genuine master of the dark mystic arts – at least that's what it says on his poster and he is sticking to it.

It features Skins actress April Pearson, Nathan Clarke, who has appeared in the new Alex Rider film, and Anthony Head, known for his roles in Merlin and Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

Stephen worked alongside his long-time colleague on CBBC Andy's Aquatic and Safari Adventures, Adam Oldroyd who directed and wrote the film.

He said: "It is a quite a quirky little film. It is British humour. It is based on old comedy film and looks like one. It is exciting to finally get it out there.

"Les was brilliant. He is a natural talent. He was quite quirky and fit the part.

"They all were brilliant. Nathan was quite funny, the way he played it. His character is not the brightest person and the way he played it was great."

Due to scheduling, they filmed in January as this is usually a less busy time for the industry but it did not come without its challenges.

Stephen recalled having to shovel snow out the back of some shots when the weather had turned and having to film at night.

He added: "We were filming in the streets and then there was this couple standing in their underwear going 'turn the lights off we cannot sleep'.

"Another day, we were filming and the town had a bell ringing so we could not hear anything."

Sideshow will be available to watch from March 11 at selected cinemas across the country and on Amazon Prime, Sky Store, Virgin Media, Google Play and Microsoft from March 21.
