Decision due on late night supermarket deliveries

LATE night deliveries at a Northfleet supermarket could be extended for another six months despite opposition from residents.

This week Gravesham Borough Council was due to discuss whether Sainsbury’s could continue receiving deliveries until 1am at its Springhead Road site from Monday to Saturday.

Officers recommended the scheme be approved subject to a number of conditions including no more than two deliveries between 9pm and 1am and that these should be subject to a noise restriction.

Colin and Linda Mattick, who live almost opposite the Wingfield Bank delivery yard, say the extension will give them sleepless nights.

Mr Mattick said: “We are used to the traffic going up and down but the deliveries are an alien noise.”

Labour County Councillor Ray Parker is also concerned about the noise level of lorries.

He said: “Gravesham Borough Council must accept the professional advice from the Noise Abatement Society and impose the silent approach scheme or refuse the application.”

The silent approach scheme would see quietening measures introduced in and around the delivery area as well as the monitoring of noise levels by an independent body.
