Epic triathlon challenge for father and son team

A young boy and his dad are taking on England’s highest mountain, its largest natural lake and one of the country’s steepest roads in a mammoth challenge for charity.

A year after relaunching, the hospice charity ellenor is going strong and staff are hoping more people will turn to them and get involved – like eight-year-old Ollie Chamberlain and dad Danny.

The pair have already embarked on huge feats for the hospice, including cycling 800 miles, rowing 165 miles and climbing Ben Nevis.

At the end of this month the pair, of Knatts Valley Road, West Kingsdown, will be embarking on an epic triathlon of a 50-mile walk followed by one- mile swim and a 150-mile bike ride.

They will be scaling Scafell Pike, swimming across Lake Windermere and cycling across the Yorkshire Dales, the Pennines and the North Yorkshire Moors, taking in Rosedale Chimney – one of the steepest roads in England. Danny said: “When you’re asking people to put their hands in their pockets for the third time in three years you need to be doing something remarkable. People have been really generous. We’ve raised more than £6,000. We’ve seen some cracking sights during our trips, including a golden eagle, and red deer running along side us.”

The family funds all the trips, so every penny raised goes directly to ellenor. The pair are training at the moment on some of Kent’s steepest hills, and swimming daily.

Last year they travelled to all the capital cities in the UK and it’s Ollie’s quick sense of humour – which has earned him the nickname Ollie Onions, because he brings tears of laughter to his parents – which always gets them through.

The charity is looking for more volunteers as well as those they can help.

Senior staff nurse Sarah Green said during the anniversary on Thursday: “We need to let the community know what we are about, who we care for and the work we are doing so that everyone is able to access our services. Anyone can refer themselves to ellenor or contact us for advice about a loved one.”
