Firefighters tackle four blazes across county

A flat in a block for elderly people was left badly damaged and one house was destroyed as four separate fires broke out in Kent at the weekend.

A 72-year-old man was taken to hospital suffering from smoke inhalation after escaping a blaze in sheltered accommodation in Nargate Street, Littlebourne, during the early hours of Sunday morning.

Following the incident, KFRS is due to hold discussions with Canterbury City Council about the merits of sprinkler systems.

Four teams were called to the flats in Littlebourne in the early hours of Sunday after a fire broke out in a bedroom.

The alarm was raised at Ellen Court at about 5.30am.

The blaze was contained to the room but some residents were moved away from the area.

Elsewhere in the county, a house in Gravesend was completely destroyed by fire on Sunday night.

Crews were called to Trafalgar Road where the fire had taken hold in the kitchen.

Initially, it was thought people were inside the building, but soon became apparent that everyone was out.

Meanwhile, firefighters were also called to a house in Rochester on Sunday night, where a fire had broken out in the stairwell.

The first floor of the house in Ford Street was well alight when crews just before 7.30pm.

It's not thought anyone was injured in either of the fires.

Police are also investigating separate fires which badly damaged two sheds on an allotments plot in Rochester way, Canterbury, on Saturday night.

The fires broke out at about 8pm and are thought to have been started deliberately.
