Two fly-tippers have been fined thousands of pounds each after being caught dumping waste.

CCTV footage caught one man depositing a sofa and other household waste at the recycling area in Ordnance Road, Gravesend.

The location is a hotspot for fly-tipping and is regularly monitored by the council’s enforcement team.

Following the incident, Alexandru Marius Zlate was taken to court and after pleading guilty to the fly-tipping offence he was ordered to pay fines and costs totalling £1,500.

In a separate case, two trolleys full of black bin bags and household waste were dumped at the railway bridge connecting Beaumont Drive and Stanbrook Road, Northfleet.

The council’s environmental enforcement team were able to trace the items back to an address in Beaumont Drive which was linked to Octavian Ciortian.

He did not admit to dumping the waste but did accept he had failed to ensure it was disposed of lawfully.

Magistrates ordered him to pay £1,892.66 after pleading guilty to an offence of failing in his duty of care and failing to provide required documentation.

Last month, councillors decided to increase fines for offenders who are caught fly-tipping and littering to meet updated government legislation.

Local authorities can now charge £1,000 for fly-tipping offences, a 150% increase from £400, £500 for littering, a 233% rise from £150, and £600 for duty of care, a 50% increase from £400.
