Former Gravesend schoolboy scoops BAFTA

A talented new media producer from Gravesham was beaming with pride after scooping a BAFTA.

Alex Hryniewicz, 26, who grew up in Wrotham Road, Meopham, was presented with the Academy accolade at the awards ceremony in London on Sunday.

The former Gravesend Grammar School for Boys pupil and his team won the Interactivity category for Channel 4’s Embarrassing Bodies Online.

Mr Hryniewicz said: “It was such a big surprise as we were up against the BBC’s Olympic coverage. I never expected to get into television but I think studying IT at school definitely helped.”

He has followed in the footsteps of BAFTA winner Paul Greengrass, also from Gravesend, who was named best director for United 93 at the 60th British Academy’s film awards in 2007.

Alex’s sister Cllr Laura Hryniewicz, who is cabinet member for Young Gravesham, said: “It is inspiring for all young people in Gravesham. I am immensely proud of him.”
