Gravesend Borough Market re-opens after Covid-19 lockdown

Gravesend Borough Market has welcomed back shoppers for the first time since going into coronavirus lockdown in March.

Queues began to form 45 minutes ahead of the 10am opening on Saturday of the Fresh Produce Market, which operated on a strict socially-distanced basis.

The Mayor of Gravesham, Cllr John Caller, officially re-opened the market and greeted the first shoppers through the doors

Numbers inside the market building were limited, with shoppers following a one-way system and encouraged to ‘Come, Buy and Leave’.

Cllr Shane Mochrie-Cox, Gravesham council’s cabinet member for communities and leisure, said the first day back in business had been a great success.

“To see people queueing so early and being careful to observe social distancing was really encouraging, especially for the traders who were so excited to be back,” said Cllr Mochrie-Cox.

“The fresh produce market had built a large following very quickly before it was interrupted by the lockdown, and it was fabulous to see so many people back to support it.

“It gives us great encouragement ahead of the return of our non-food retailers from Tuesday, June 16, the day after the government’s restrictions on non-essential businesses are lifted.”

Cllr Mochrie-Cox also launched a new strategy for the market on the day, setting out the council’s plans for the venue’s future.

He said: “A successful market will enhance the vibrancy of the Gravesham economy, raise Gravesham’s economic profile, help develop a cohesive community, enhance the borough’s cultural offer and promote Gravesham’s arts and heritage.

“Our strategy clearly sets out our path to achieving those ambitions and continuing to grow Gravesend Borough Market’s role in a thriving and vibrant town centre economy.”
