A witness watched as they kept some of it but threw the rest in a bin behind a wall at the end of the street near to The Terrace.

Police were alerted and an officer from Kent Police’s Dog Unit called in.

He recovered the jewels from the bin, which are believed to have been stolen. The officer then found the men in Windmill Street and arrested them on suspicion of burglary and handling stolen goods.

The duo, aged 34 and 42 and from the Gravesend area, have since been released pending further investigation.

It all happened at around 11.20am on Wednesday.

A spokesman said: "Inquiries remain ongoing, which includes returning the property to its rightful owners."
