Reports of assault at Guru Nanak Darbar Gurdwara after election meeting in Gravesend

A man is reported to have been assaulted after a meeting at a gurdwara.

Police were called to the Guru Nanak Darbar in Gravesend.

The incident is said to have happened at around 4pm on Sunday, July 9, at the venue in Khalsa Avenue.

A spokesman for the Gurdwara said: “Guru Nanak Darbar Gurdwara held their Special General Meeting (SGM) in line with the Gurdwara's constitution.

“The SGM agenda was focused on nominations of candidates for the role of President (Mukh Sewadar), along with the selection of an election board to oversee the process in the coming months.

“Following the meeting, an incident occurred in the communal area, away from the prayer halls, which resulted in an altercation.”

The spokesman confirmed the management team are assisting police with their investigations and footage of the day has been handed over.

Three candidates were nominated to stand for election and a board of five people to oversee the process have been chosen.

The spokesman said the meeting then concluded peacefully.

A spokesman from Kent Police confirmed officers are carrying out inquiries to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.
