Gravesend Grammar School expansion could be back on track

Plans to expand a grammar school could be back on track after more funding was approved for the scheme.

Gravesend Grammar School is increasing the number of Year 7 places from 174 to 210 to cope with the growing demand in Gravesham.

Under £7.6 million redevelopment plans, the Church Walk site is creating a new teaching block and canteen. Around 1,213 pupils study there.

Recently, Kent Fire and Rescue Service said £900,000 needed to be invested in two hydrants at the site in case of a fire. Without this, the project would have stopped.

Kent County Council's (KCC) education committee met on Tuesday and endorsed the added investment to enable the expansion to continue.

A final decision will be made by KCC's cabinet member for education, Cllr Shellina Prendergast (Con) by August 4.
