Gravesend police officer Sharon Burnige killed in car accident while on holiday in Greece

A police officer died after she lost control of a Jeep while on holiday in Greece, an inquest heard last week.

Sharon Burnige, 47, from Gravesend, was killed on the island of Kos at 9.45pm on September 6 last year.

The vehicle flipped and ended up on its side facing in the opposite direction, with a patrolling police officer on hand to attend the scene.

David Lysons was the only passenger in the jeep, which was travelling from the island’s westernmost town of Kefalos to the central town of Kos.

“I have no idea what it was (that made her lose control), to be quite honest,” he told coroner Roger Hatch.

“I have been over it again and again in my mind.”

Mr Lysons said that the Jeep was moving at about 45kmph and that — although it was dark — conditions were good.

The accident took place on the main road from Kefalos to Kos.

It was a warm evening and the roof and windows were all down.

Ms Burnige turned to him suddenly and shouted “watch out” just before losing control, but Mr Lysons does not know what sparked the panic.

A post-mortem examination at Kos General Hospital on September 8 found she died of severe injuries.

Upon hearing the evidence, Mr Hatch admitted that the case was “something of a mystery” and concluded that the death was due to an accident.
