Open verdict recorded on 20-year-old's death

A man who died after falling from the top floor of a multi-storey car park in Gravesend had been suffering mood swings in the weeks leading up to his death, a court heard today.

John Day, 20, of Grange Road, Gravesend had had a row with girlfriend Amber Holman on the day of the incident May 06, 2008.

Mr Day, a plumber's apprentice for Dartford's GSK, had gone back to his parents house where he lived. In a statement to Dartford Coroner's Court, his mum Barbara Phillips said he was in a bad mood and accused her of interfering when she asked what was wrong.

She said: “He was in a real temper.”

His mum decided to leave the house with John’s sister Zoe to let him calm down but shortly after she received a text from him and went straight home. When she arrived she found he had gone. Horrified witnesses dialled 999 after seeing John fall from the top level of the Thamesgate shopping centre car park in the town centre. John was confirmed dead at Darent Valley Hospital. Alan Blunsden, coroner, said despite CCTV footage showing John in the car park on his own there was not enough evidence to say whether he had taken his own life. He recorded an open verdict
