The silver Transit bus is distinctive, with the name 'Lyn' on the front and the name of the school on the side.

The minibus is one of four used by the special needs school, in Ash Road, to take the children, who have severe additional needs, to their swimming lessons and on school trips.

It was donated by the school's charity, The Friends of Milestone, and allowed the children to regularly participate in off-site activities.

Janet Tidmus, deputy principal, said: "The minibus was more than just a mode of transportation for our students – it was a symbol of hope and opportunity for them to experience a sense of inclusivity.

"It's heartbreaking to know that someone would target our school and take away such a vital resource that directly impacts our students.”

The Friends of Milestone and the school are now exploring alternative transport options.

Sarah Goosani, principal of Milestone Academy, said: "The theft of our minibus may have created a temporary obstacle, but we are determined to overcome it and continue providing our students with the best possible learning experiences.

"We greatly appreciate any support our community can offer during this challenging time."

Terri Cox, from Greenhithe, whose son Ciaran attends the school, is furious.

"I actually can't believe that someone would stoop so low as to steal a school bus from a special needs school," she said.

Police are investigating and are keen to hear from anyone who may have seen the minibus with Milestone signage and the registration YR13 VKM since Monday night.

A police spokesman said: "At 9.15am on Tuesday, March 28, police were called to the report of a stolen minivan from Milestone School. Investigations into the circumstances are ongoing."

If you have any information regarding the theft of the minibus, call police on 101.
