Gravesend and Dartford Poppy Appeal launch in aid of Royal British Legion

The annual poppy appeal to mark Remembrance Day and raise money for the Royal British Legion is now under way.

This year's commemorative event was launched in Gravesend on Saturday while Dartford welcomed its first stall in the Orchards Centre this morning.

Mayor of Gravesham, Cllr John Caller, joined Gravesend Poppy Appeal organiser Dave Taylor and volunteers in Gravesend Borough Market, off the High Street, for the start of fundraising.

Dave said: "It's been a strange year so it's hard to start setting targets and stuff like that, so we will do the best we can with the limited stock we've got.

"We're quietly confident we can make a decent total."

In Gravesend , there are stalls in the St George's Centre off New Road, Asda in Thames Way, Morrison's in Coldhabour Road and Ebbsfleet International Station.

The organiser for the Dartford appeal, Chris West, said: "At the moment, shops which have had customers have been asking for poppies so they're doing well.

"I don't think I'm going to match last year's figure but we will have a good return.

"It's a shame, because all we have this year are the normal poppies and the pin badges, because we couldn't get our hands on anything else."

People can show their support by picking up a poppy at the Orchards Centre, The Post Office in the High Street and a selection of supermarkets such as Sainsbury's, where people can add a donation to their shopping bill.

In a year of cancellations and confusion, organisers are hoping to raise as much as possible after implementing new ways to donate to ensure social distancing.

People can give money by scanning a barcode on the pop-up stalls, reducing the need to carry cash.

A selection of stalls will also have card machines and people will be encouraged to make a donation via The Royal British Legion's website.
