Northfleet School for Girls in Gravesend raise money for Sport Relief with 24 hour challenge

Staff and students at Northfleet School for Girls in Gravesend have raised more than £1,250 after conquering 24 sports in 24 hours in support of Sport Relief.

Beginning at noon yesterday and finishing at noon today, teachers and pupils took part in activities ranging from wheelchair rugby to archery and even Just Dance.

This year the Sport Relief theme was Game On and head of PE, Laura Thomas, created the 24 hour challenge to show her support for the charity she holds close to her heart.

She said: "The first few hours went quickly, it was a lot of fun and everyone was really upbeat, we wanted to raise as much as we could as Sport Relief works really closely with children's mental health.

"Students took part until 8pm yesterday and even came in at 6 o'clock this morning to keep us going. For us though, across the 24 hours, between 2am and 4am was the hardest.

"But the thing that really kept us going was seeing the Go Fund Me page amount rising and seeing the students, parents and community rooting for us."

The Go Fund Me page was targeted at £500 but so far more than £1,250 has been raised through bucket collections and the sponsorship page.

Head teacher, Chris Norwood, said: "NSFG are so proud of all our staff and students taking part in the challenge of 24 sports in 24 hours.

"We have seen them take part a wide range of activities including street dance, uni-hock, archery, wheelchair rugby with the Gravesend Dynamite Wheelchair Rugby League and even boccia.

"We are particularly pleased they managed to continue throughout the night raising money for this great cause and developing awareness of so many different ways to enjoy sport."

Media teacher Graeme Hellyer, performing arts teacher Aaliyah Beaumont, psychology and sociology teacher Jeff Poulin and PE teachers Laura Thomas, Franci Akhazzan, and Sam Potts took part in the challenge for the full 24 hours.

Collectively all the staff agreed lacrosse was a favourite and a real pick me up at 4am.
