Teenager arrested over manslaughter of schoolboy in Vale Road, Northfleet

A teenager has been arrested on suspicion of manslaughter following the death of a schoolboy who was hit by a minibus.

The youngster – who was also a pedestrian – was arrested following the tragedy yesterday morning.

An 11-year-old Northfleet Technology College pupil – who has been named locally as Szymon – passed away in hospital after suffering multiple injuries.

The arrested boy, who comes from the Gravesend area, was quizzed before being released to return to the police station on February 17.

Meanwhile, tributes have been laid near the scene in Vale Road, close to the junction with Colyer Road, Northfleet.

They included flowers, candles and tea lights, basketballs and cards with messages such as "you will always be remembered" and "you are in a better place now".

Two basketballs have also been transcribed with R.I.P and "you were the best at ball".

Messages have been left by friends and students, sixth-form committee team, mums from nearby Shears Green Junior School and from The Crown pub in Perry Street.

One read: "R.I.P little man. I know I've never met you but you have touched the heart of every parent."

Another said: "RIP Szymon. I'll miss you mate. I hope you're still playing basketball in heaven."

Yesterday the college sent a letter to parents informing them of the tragedy.

Head teacher Jane Partridge said: "I'm sorry to inform you that one of our community died this morning after being hit by a vehicle on his way to school.

"The incident is currently under investigation by the police so we are unable to comment further.

"A number of our students witnessed the incident, and the following events, and are understandably extremely distressed.

"The school will be providing support if it is required for these students."

Officers and ambulance crews, including the air ambulance went to the scene at 8.25am.

The area was cordoned off by police while paramedics treated the youngster.

In a statement issued yesterday afternoon, police said: "Officers are appealing for witnesses following a fatal collision involving a pedestrian, involving a white Mercedes Sprinter minibus.

"It took place close to the junction with Colyer Road and Park Avenue.

"Police and ambulance crews attended and a boy, of secondary school age, was taken to hospital, where he later died. The child’s next-of-kin have been made aware."

The college has been contacted for further details.

Anyone who witnessed the collision, or who saw either the child or vehicle in the moments leading up to it, is urged to contact police on 01622 798538 quoting reference 02-0167.

Drivers are also asked to check dashcams for any footage which may assist the investigation.
