Thousands expected at weekend festival

This weekend will bring one of the biggest cultural spectacles Gravesend has seen.

Dancers and floats will proceed through the town on Saturday, celebrating Vaisakhi.

The event, which marks the Sikh new year, has been organised by the Guru Nanak Darbar Gurdwara Management Committee with support from the North West Kent Racial Equality Council (NWKREC) and Kent Police.

The town is expected to be filled with about 5,000 spectators from across the county, as the streets echo to the sound of the Jugnu Bhangra drummers.

Celebrations will begin with the Nagar Kirtan (procession) outside the Guru Nanak Darbar Gurdwara in Clarence Place, from 11.30am, and will make its way to the new Gurdwara site, in Khalsa Avenue.

It will continue through the town, past the Guru Ravidas Gurdwara in Brandon Street, before returning to Clarence Place.

The procession will be led by the Panj Piary (5 Beloved) followed by the Sikh’s holy book the Guru Granth Sahib in a special model of the Golden Temple.

Gurvinder Sandher, assistant director of NWKREC said “I hope that as in previous years the local community will come out and support it and witness the colour and positive energy of the procession.”
