A2 tree fire: Pile of conifers cause large fire near Southfleet and Pepperhill exit on the A2

A pile of conifer trees were found on fire in a field near the A2 yesterday evening.

The blaze was described as "large" by Kent Fire and Rescue Service and was visible from the carriageway from about 5pm last night.

It is suspected that the trees were deliberately ignited, according to fire crews.

The trees were found in the middle of a field near the Pepperhill exit of the major road.

A Kent Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said that the flames were "not seriously dangerous" and there was minimal risk of it spreading.

However, he said that the risk was greater than usual because of strong winds.

Fire crews were at the scene for around three hours.
