Medical checks carried out found the man – aged in his 50s – had suffered injuries consistent with being assaulted, police said.

He was found in Thames Way next to the roundabout adjoining car park C at the station.

Detectives believe the incident took place between 9.50pm and 10.15pm on Thursday and have been searching CCTV evidence in the area.

But officers are appealing for any witnesses who might have seen anything suspicious to contact the investigation team.

It was not initially clear how the man had come by his injuries and paramedics took him to hospital where doctors confirmed the injuries had been deliberately caused.

A police spokesman said the victim was discharged from the hospital the same night and was communicative with the people who found him and ambulance staff who attended the scene.

Police are now trying to piece together all the circumstances of the incident.

The team are keen to hear from anyone in the area at the time of the incident, including both men who stopped to help the victim before the ambulance arrived.

Any passing motorists who may have dashcam footage filmed in the area have also been urged to come forward.
