Ebbsfleet United striker Danny Kedwell wants to keep playing until he's 40

Danny Kedwell plans to keep playing until he's 40.

The striker turned 35 earlier this month and is still the first name on Ebbsfleet's team sheet every week.

Kedwell is integral to everything Fleet do and believes they can emulate the promotions he won with AFC Wimbledon and Gillingham.

And anyone who thinks he's coming towards the end of his illustrious career can think again.

He said: "I’m going to go to 40, playing in this league and maybe League 2 if we get promoted.

"I enjoy my goals more now than I did when I was younger.

"People say to me ‘are you playing two games in three days?’ but what’s wrong with that?

"I feel really good, I’m loving my time here and the only time I am going to stop is when the gaffer turns round and says to me ‘Keds, you’ve had enough’ but that’s not going to be soon."

Most players fade in their mid-thirties, especially forwards, but not Kedwell.

He said: "I look after myself more than I did when I was younger.

"When you’re young, you can go out on Saturday and play on a Tuesday with no help but as you get older, you can’t do those sort of things.

"The more you look after your body, the longer you can go.

"I’m training every day and enjoying it whereas before, I was not training at all my other clubs because you’re young and you think you can get away with it."

He added: "We've got the team spirit you need to make success. I’ve been promoted and won leagues and we’ve got in our changing-room what I’ve had before."

Kedwell faces more competition for his place now than he did last season following the purchase of Michael Cheek and return to fitness of Darren McQueen.

But he said: "I’m at that age now where I just want to be out there as much as I can.

"They’ve brought Cheeky in and he’s a top player. I’m sure he will get his chance and he’s got to take that shirt.

"I’ll be there to help him - that’s what I’m here for. I’m a team player, not an individual. I never have been so if he does come in, I’m sure he’ll score goals and do well."

The relaxed atmosphere around Ebbsfleet's squad speaks volumes.

Kedwell said: "I’ve got players behind me like Jukesy (Andy Drury) so when I do mess up, he’s laughing at me.

"You haven’t got that bittiness when some players are on your case.

"When you feel good on the pitch, the quality comes out and everyone in the club gets on so well.

"If you do make a mistake, it’s not personal. Sometimes they do need a little telling-off but they take it on the chin and get on with it and we’re in there laughing and joking afterwards."
