Ebbsfleet United's Lawrie Wilson wants to get out of National League relegation zone

Ebbsfleet defender Lawrie Wilson is confident they can climb out of the relegation zone over the festive period.

The Fleet start a run of five games inside a fortnight when they host Woking in the National League on Saturday.

They've only tasted defeat twice in nine games under boss Kevin Watson – and Wilson is confident they can make progress during a festive period that sees them face Dagenham, twice, and Dover.

"We need to keep performing well and the results will look after themselves," said Wilson.

"If we can get out of it come early next year then we can kick on and grow as much as we can.

"We all know in the Christmas period that the games come thick and fast.

"It's a good thing if we're on form and playing well, playing teams in and around us so we can gain points on them.

"Hopefully we can start changing the draws into wins and move up the table."

Wilson believes the Fleet gave a glimpse of their potential in the FA Trophy win at Enfield Town last Saturday.

There was a freedom to their play in many respects, with league points not at stake the 32-year-old believed it took the pressure off the players.

"We had nothing to lose so we could go out and play how we know we can play," said Wilson.

"It's actually quite nice to have a break from the league. The position that we're in puts a lot of pressure on people.

"To go to Enfield and get the early goal was key. We suddenly grew in confidence, you started seeing players wanting the ball, midfielders getting on it.

"Sometimes in the league we've held on and you get a bit nervy so it was a good game for us all-round."

It was a first start for Wilson since his return from injury with on-loan Marvel Ekpiteta previously keeping him out of the side.

He added: "The gaffer came in and changed everything around and it's been good so far so I've not been able to get back in since I've been fit.

"I'm an experienced pro, I understand football and you have to sit patiently and wait, do the right things off the field and be ready for when you do get a chance.

"Marv had a slight niggle so I've come in, kept a clean sheet and given the gaffer a headache which is all you can do as a player."
