FA Cup: Cheltenham Town 2 Ebbsfleet United 0 match report

Ebbsfleet's interest in the FA Cup ended at Cheltenham on Tuesday night.

Fleet made the trip west hoping to reach the second round for the first time since 2003.

But their long wait goes on after goals from Tyrone Barnett and Alex Addai sunk Garry Hill’s side, who have yet to score in three games since he took over as manager.

Hill made one change at Whaddon Road, bringing in Jack King for Kenny Clark at the centre of Ebbsfleet's defence.

Chris Clements replaced Jacob Maddox in Cheltenham's only change on a chilly night in the West Country.

The home side went close in the opening minute when Nigel Atangana collected Barnett's pass and curled a shot narrowly wide from outside the box with Nathan Ashmore scrambling across his goal.

At the other end, Chris Bush's long throw was flicked on but Dave Winfield sent his header straight into the gloves of Scott Flinders.

The National League side didn't see much of the ball for a while after that as Cheltenham penned them back into their defensive third.

Fleet dealt well with crosses into their box and then crowded out Clements, who was forced into a rushed shot which flashed wide of the near post.

Barnett and Luke Varney both failed to hit the target when they connected with deliveries from wide areas but the visitors were struggling to get a foothold in midfield.

Atangana was dictating play centrally and when Fleet did manage to get themselves up the pitch, Luke Coulson and Sean Shields were guilty of surrendering possession in good areas.

A deflected Coulson shot almost ran into King's path but Flinders was able to gather.

The hushed home crowd found their voices moments later but only in disgust as a wretched Chris Hussey free-kick from the corner of the box crashed straight into Ebbsfleet's two-man wall.

Fleet suddenly broke their shackles with a rapid counter-attack which almost brought them the opening goal. Coulson got his head up to find Shields and when he fed the sprinting Corey Whitely down the right, Flinders did well to narrow the angle and beat out Whitely's powerful strike.

The visitors ended the first half on top, with Shields' deep cross just too strong for Danny Kedwell, although they did survive a scare at the other end.

Ashmore came for a left-wing cross but could only palm the ball straight tothe lively Ryan Broom, whose drilled ball through the six-yard box should have been turned in by the static Barnett.

A mix-up between Winfield and Ashmore at the start of the second half went unpunished before Varney sent a free header wide from Hussey's inviting left-wing cross.

But the visitors should have taken the lead when Shields' excellent cross from the left was headed over by Kedwell, six yards out.

Cheltenham made them pay for the miss when the pacy Addai, having just come on, saw his cross helped by Varney into the path of Barnett, who scored with a diving header.

Hill responded by sending on Michael Cheek to partner Kedwell and the substitute had a chance straight away but missed his kick in the box.

Barnett headed wide from a cross and Hussey swirled a free-kick over as Cheltenham looked to kill the tie and it was hard to see where an Ebbsfleet goal might come from.

Kedwell had two shots blocked in a crowded penalty area but the visitors were reduced to 10 men, seven minutes from time, when Sam Magri was booked twice in 30 seconds - first for a foul then for dissent.

Some desperate defending from the Robins kept the ball out when Winfield tried to force it home but otherwise Ebbsfleet's route one approach paid no dividends.

Addai tapped home a second in the final minute of stoppage-time after Ashmore had stretched to keep out Varney's low shot.
