The former Plough Inn in Broomfield, Herne Bay, set to sell for £525k

A once-popular village pub transformed into a family home is set to be sold for more than half-a-million pounds.

Work on the site of the Plough Inn in Margate Road, Herne Bay, is nearing its end, as developers expect residents to start moving onto the plot in September.

The £1.3 million scheme includes the construction of a new house and block of four flats on the land, while the former tavern will be used as a four-bedroom home.

Owner Colin Deehan, who is working on the seven-figure project alongside father-and-son developers Ralph and Alistair Noel, says the properties are already attracting significant levels of interest.

“The development has massively improved the site,” he said.

“We’ve actually got reservations on two of the homes.

“There’s a lot of interest in them. Someone’s also put down a deposit on the pub.”

The old boozer, which will be equipped with three bathrooms and three reception rooms, has been slapped with a guide price of £525,000 by Canterbury estate agency Oatley and O’Connor.

The newly built three-bedroom house is expected to fetch £440,000, as marketing material asserts it has been “finished to a very high standard”.

Meanwhile, the flats are being advertised for as much as £250,000.

“We’ve nearly finished the pub conversion and with the other house, the roof’s going on,” Mr Deehan continued.

“The pub will be really nice – it’ll be in a very good state and have a quirky design.

“The pub had fire damage, had been flooded, was damp and rotten, so we ended up knocking bits of it off and then refurbishing it.”

The developers launched two bids to demolish the rundown pub and replace it with a convenience store and flats in 2018.

But after Canterbury City Council rejected both applications they decided to revise their bid and keep the shell of the pub. The project was given the green light last March.

It was gutted by a fire following a suspected arson attack in August 2018 and progress on the site was stalled just days after work began last year, when raiders stole £5,000 of construction equipment.
