Thanet Way 50mph limit: Mercedes driver ticketed after being caught at 90mph

A speeding driver caught almost DOUBLE the new 50mph limit on the Thanet Way has been ticketed by police.

Traffic officers stopped the Mercedes S-Class just before 10am this morning.

The driver, who was pulled over by an unmarked police car, was travelling at 90mph.

Highways bosses introduced the temporary 50mph limit last year along the 10-mile stretch of dual carriageway between Marshside and Dargate after labelling the road a “safety hazard”.

Last year, motorists claimed many drivers were completely ignoring the new limit, with thousands routinely flouting the law.

Highways officials said at the time that not a single ticket had been handed to speeding drivers, but police tweeted this morning saying the Mercedes driver had been penalised.

The 50mph restriction has now been lifted on the London-bound side as the road have been resurfaced, but the 50mph limit is still in force on the coastbound stretch.

Resurfacing work on the coastbound stretch will start on Thursday, March 2 and should take 10 nights to complete.

Highways bosses will shut parts of the road overnight between 8pm and 7am.

They expect to be finished by the morning of Thursday, March 16.
