Herne Bay Zombie Crawl returns to paint the town blood red

More than 600 living dead braved the wind and rain to stagger their way through the centre of a seaside town.

Organised by the BayPromoTeam, the Zombie Crawl returned to Herne Bay on Saturday evening – two years since the last one.

The family-friendly event saw hundreds of men, women and children dress up as the likes of Pennywise the Dancing Clown, ghoulish Oompa Loompas and Negan from the Walking Dead.

Organiser Scott Turner said: “We had a year away, but it seemed like we hadn’t.

“We had people who spent months coming up with their costume ideas. The amount of effort they put in is above and beyond what you’d expect.

“We were chuffed to have so many come out on a cold, windy, horrible Saturday in October. They were dedicated horror fans.”

The route started at the Clock Tower Plaza and wound its way along William Street, the High Street and Station Road.

Whitstable’s 30-strong drum band – the Samba Pelo Mar – led the procession, which also included a group of acrobatic stilt walkers.

“There was as many people who turned out to watch the zombies as there were in the crawl itself,” Mr Turner added. “That gave it a party atmosphere.”

A Zombie Ball was held afterwards at the King’s Hall, drawing 350 people.

Mr Turner confirmed that the BayPromoTeam already has “one eye” on next year’s crawl.

“We heard all evening about how much people missed it,” he said.

“At the moment, I think it will happen next year – I can’t see why not. Whatever we do will be good fun again”
