KENT Police have issued an E-fit image of a man they suspect was planning a distraction burglary and may be planning further attempts.

The man called at the home of an elderly woman in Paraker Way, Hythe, between 9am and 10am on Tuesday, December 4.

He told the 85-year-old he was rom "Country Housing" and was there about her central heating. He asked if he could check her boiler.

Fortunately, the woman became suspicious and refused to let him in. Later she checked with her heating supplier and Shepway Council who both advised her that they had not sent any engineers.

The man is described as being white, and thought to be aged between 45 and 55. He was broadly built with short, brown hair. He was smartly dressed.

Police are advising elderly residents to use a door chain and to check the identity of everyone calling at the door.

A police spokesman said: "Bogus callers try to create a sense of urgency and pretend to be from the water or energy company to try and get into people's homes.

"Genuine callers will not mind waiting at the doorstep while you close the door and check their identity by phoning the relevant company or organisation."

"If you are in any doubt at all or feel intimidated by someone at your door call 999."

Anyone who can identify the man in the image is asked to contact Det Con Nick Houghton on 01303 850055. Alternatively call Kent Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111. This call is free, your anonymity is guaranteed and you may be eligible for a reward.
