Hythe Town host Worthing United in FA Cup before Herne Bay league clash

Hythe Town are gearing up for what manager Sam Denly describes as a "massive" weekend of league and cup football.

The Cannons host Worthing United in the FA Cup preliminary round on Saturday with prize money of £2,890 on the table.

Denly's side are back at Reachfields on Monday for a Bostik South East derby against his former club Herne Bay.

"It's a massive weekend and I'm looking forward to it," Denly said. "That's why we're involved in football, for weekends like this.

"We've got a massive home game in the FA Cup on Saturday. Everyone knows it's important to get cup runs for revenue and all that kind of stuff and then comes a big game against Herne Bay on Bank Holiday Monday."

Worthing play in Division 1 of the Southern Combination League - two levels below Hythe.

But Denly said: "You can't take anything for granted.

"That's why the FA Cup is one of the best competitions, because there are always upsets. We've got to make sure we're not one of those on Saturday.

"They'll be coming here to cause an upset and we will be favourites because we play in a higher league but that means nothing on the day.

"We've got to apply ourselves exactly the same as if we were playing someone in our own league or a league above."

Hythe have taken three points from their first two league games - two more than Herne Bay.

"It's another good game to look forward to," Denly said. "They'll be a good side this year, they're young and I'm expecting them to play good football again.

"We need to be playing at our best 90% of the time. We're going to have a few bad days and there will be players we have to carry now and then but if we want to compete and be there or thereabouts at the end of the season, we've got to win football matches consistently."

Hythe only named four substitutes against East Grinstead on Saturday but Denly's happy with his options.

Ryan Palmer is back after suspension and Junior Akihionbare completes his ban on Saturday while Jack Sammoutis (heel) and Chris Kinnear (ankle) should both be fit.

Denly said: "We've gone pretty top-heavy this year and I wanted to do that. We've got a strong XI and five or six good subs.

"I've got a few lads on loan at Canterbury City but I felt we didn't need to name a fifth (sub) on Saturday.

"We've got a strong small squad and that's how I want it to stay, it keeps things working in line with the budget and if I need to bring someone in, I will.

"But with the two suspended players coming back in, we're fine again and I'll have to leave someone out."

Hythe entertained Margate in the Kent Senior Cup last night (Tuesday).
