Hythe Town boss Sam Denly on the Bostik South East promotion race

Sam Denly believes there is more to come from promotion-chasing Hythe with two-thirds of the season to go.

Cannons are fourth in Bostik South East, 13 points behind leaders Cray Wanderers and six off Hastings in second.

They’ve won seven of their first 13 games – losing three – without playing at their best.

“We’re sitting all right,” said Denly. “Cray have got off to a stormer and Hastings are going well too but we can’t worry about what other teams are doing.

“We’re sitting fourth with a game in hand and a lot of the teams around us have played Thamesmead so they’ve all got three points to come off, which we haven’t, so that’s a plus for us.

“We’re happy where we are. We’re in the play-off positions and I still feel there’s a lot more to come from us.

“We haven’t really got going yet but it’s not how you start the season, it’s how you finish it. We finished last season like a train.

“We haven’t been playing great football so to be sitting fourth and knowing we’ve got a lot more to offer, it puts us in a good position.”

Denly watched Hythe come from 3-0 down to draw 3-3 at play-off rivals Phoenix Sports on Saturday.

He said: “I learned a lot about the boys on Saturday, great character and the belief we’ve got in the dressing-room. They’re a special group of players and we can do good things this season but there’s still a lot of things we need to work on. That was highlighted by Saturday’s game because we did ship some soft goals.

“But it doesn’t matter if we’re 3-0 down with 10 minutes to go, we’ll still believe we’ve got enough quality to get something out of the game.”

Hythe don’t have a league game this weekend so they’ve arranged a friendly at Reachfields against Tunbridge Wells.

Denly said: “It’s annoying, this season, how the league is in terms of fixtures. You don’t get many midweek games so you’re having to wait Saturday to Saturday to get games in.

“It’s hard to get squad rotation and give players minutes so having to wait two weeks until our next league game is far from ideal.”

Chris Kinnear and Charlie Webster should both be involved on Saturday.
