Hythe Town win FA Cup replay at Westfield after touchline bust-up in dramatic first meeting

Hythe boss Steve Watt said Westfield’s bench should be ashamed of themselves after a dramatic FA Cup tie was marred by a touchline brawl.

Goals from Frannie Collin and Kane Phillip put the Cannons in charge of Saturday’s preliminary round tie at Reachfields.

But a routine afternoon turned sour with the touchline bust-up that ended with Watt, Phillip and unused Hythe substitute Jarred Trespaderne all sent off.

They were dismissed, along with Westfield No.2 Matt Brown, an academy coach at Portsmouth, whose conduct particularly riled Watt.

The drama continued on the pitch as Westfield scored three goals in added time, only for Eli Benoit to salvage a 3-3 draw.

Hythe won last night's replay 3-1 thanks to goals from Tom Walmsley, Noel Leighton and Collin and will play Ascot United in the first qualifying round on September 4.

“Their manager (Simon Lane) has pushed our kitman over as he’s gone to get a ball out of the bag for them,” said Watt.

“That started it and then the assistant manager’s come over and it’s all kicked off.

“I’ve never come across anything like that in my whole career. I’ve been slapped as I’ve gone to break things up and then their assistant manager is going round trying to get our players sent off.

“He’s kicking and nipping at them and he’s got a reaction from Kane.

“If I’d behaved like that I’d be absolutely ashamed - it was embarrassing. There was no need to do it. It was a good, open game of football between two good teams.

“When a game’s a bit heated it can boil over everywhere but it wasn’t that type of game.

“I can only guess their bench resorted to that because things were going against them on the pitch.

“I just think it’s a shame that in today’s game and today’s world, people go about their business like that rather than concentrating on tactics.

“I didn’t cover myself in glory but it’s difficult not to react to being slapped when you’re trying to break up a fight between the manager and your kitman.

“I haven’t thrown a punch, which is what I was sent off for, I only pushed him, but I shouldn’t have reacted.

“Honestly, it was a joke. You have your disagreements on the touchline most weeks, that’s part and parcel of the game, but a line was crossed.

“I just find it so disappointing that stuff like that goes on."

Hythe visit VCD on Saturday before hosting Ramsgate at Reachfields on Bank Holiday Monday.

“The games come thick and fast and I don’t mind that,” said Watt. “We’ve spent enough time without football.

“VCD are a good side and Ramsgate have obviously invested in their squad.

“When you’ve spent the kind of money Ramsgate have, they are favourites going into the game.

“I’d expect them to be favourites whether it’s our third game in seven days or not.”
