Hythe Town manager Steve Watt challenges players to come down on right side of tight matches after 1-0 defeat at Sheppey United

Hythe boss Steve Watt says his side must find a way to pick up more points in tight games.

One goal either way has decided the Cannons’ past four games - two wins and two defeats - while last night’s Isthmian South East home match against Burgess Hill was postponed.

They lost 1-0 at Sheppey on Saturday, with Richie Hamill scoring direct from a corner in the final 20 minutes.

“We’re 1-0 merchants but it’s 1-0 either way,” said Watt, who’s signed forward James Jeffrey on dual-registration from Whitstable.

“It would be nice to be 3-0 or 4-0 up in the last 20 minutes and be able to relax but we haven’t got that luxury.

“I keep saying to the boys if you’re difficult to beat you’ll win your fair share of games.

“I’m just disappointed we seem to find a way to lose these tight games at the minute and fall on the wrong side of a 1-0.

“We lost to Ramsgate on Boxing Day to a 30-yard shot that Steve Phillips couldn’t see in the sun and on Saturday a corner goes straight in.

“We have to find a way to come away from those games with points. If we’d drawn on Saturday, we could have said, yes, it was a terrible game but we’ve got something out of it.”

Hythe, 13th in the table, visit in-form Cray Valley this Saturday (3pm) and go to East Grinstead on Tuesday (7.45pm).

Watt said: "We went through a period earlier in the season where we were too open.

“We were scoring goals but we were conceding too many. It’s now gone the other way, so we need to try and find that balance.

“I’m pleased we're difficult to beat but we need to find more of a cutting edge.”

Watt couldn’t see either side scoring at Holm Park on Saturday before Sheppey’s fortuitous winner.

The Cannons felt they should have been awarded a late penalty for handball.

“It was a game with very little quality in it,” said Watt.

“Both teams defended well and cancelled each other out.

“They’ve fluked a goal from a corner that’s gone straight in but we didn’t do enough to get a result.

“We had a clear penalty not given in the 89th minute but I’d say three points each over the two games against Sheppey is probably fair. I can’t begrudge them the points.

“I said at half-time the game would be decided by a mistake and there is a mistake on our part because the ball’s gone in direct from a corner, even if it’s wind-assisted."
