FIRMS are being urged to tap into a £3.5million fund to boost the skills of their workers.

The Learning and Skills Council for Kent and Medway (LSC) has won Government funding for the scheme after a successful pilot training programme.

It targeted key sectors such as manufacturing, retail, care, hospitality and catering.

Under a new longer-term programme, the emphasis switches to the workplace and focuses on vocational skills.

Priority is being given to basic numeracy and literacy and building Level 2 skills.

LSC skills director Tony Allen said the organisation was working closely with employers to ensure the training was timely and relevant.

He said: "We have engaged businesses in our planning process from the outset and we are determined to ensure that the skills training provided matches the needs of the local economy.

"Regular research and feedback from our Employer Forum shows us where the skills gaps are and allows us to supply tailored packages of training to suit local requirements."

Around 1,500 businesses have already been involved, with some 8,500 people going through the programme.

Mr Allen added: "This is an opportunity for employers to make sure that their staff have the right skills to build a successful business.

"We are providing an easy and straightforward way to access high quality training at no cost.

"Improving skills directly leads to increased profitability for businesses and employees gain recognised new qualifications and increase their job satisfaction by acquiring new skills."
