Inspectors marked the property on bedrooms, bathrooms, cleanliness, hospitality and breakfast. And it scored 96% - comfortably above the 85% need for the top rating.

Visit England said: “Hever Castle Bed & Breakfast continues to be very well maintained and offers an excellent standard of bed and breakfast accommodation. All the team are wished every success for the year ahead.”

Hever Castle’s four bedroom holiday cottage, Medley Cottage also maintained its five-star Gold rating, scoring 94%.

House manager Roland Smith said: “We are delighted that despite the challenges of the pandemic with furloughed staff and extra procedures to follow, both the bed and breakfast and Medley Court comfortably retained their five-star rating."

Both inspections took place at the properties, near Edenbridge, on May 26.
