This is what we know about the 15 McDonalds stores that will reopen

Fast food giant McDonald's has confirmed it is to reopen 15 of its restaurants in less than two weeks' time.

But, before you get your hopes too high, it warns it will be running a limited menu - and they will only serve up orders for home delivery at first.

The company temporarily shut all its outlets across the UK - including its numerous branches in Kent - in March as a result of the pandemic.

But it has today confirmed a number of outlets will reopen - although it warns it will "be in a limited capacity".

The location of the stores, which will open on Wednesday, May 13, will be revealed next week.

Items which will be available will include the iconic Big Mac, as well as their fries and Chicken McNuggets.

But if you've been craving a McMuffin you'll have to wait a little longer as no breakfast items will be included.

All orders will be delivered via Uber Eats and Just Eat.

It comes as KFC and Burger King confirmed they were reopening some of their outlets. Greggs, however, has said plans to reopen some outlets, have been shelved for now.

Paul Pomroy, chief executive officer, McDonald’s UK and Ireland, said: "This week we have been running controlled tests to explore the safest way to reopen our restaurants.

"To give us all confidence in the new operational measures we are introducing to keep you and our employees safe, we asked our employees for their thoughts, have incorporated much of their feedback and will continue to listen and learn.

"On May 13, we will reopen 15 of our restaurants in the UK; this will be in a limited capacity with delivery only. The restaurants involved will be announced next week as we work through inviting our employees back to work and supporting our delivery partners to prepare for our gradual return."

He added a raft of new safety measures will be in place for staff, including non-medical grade face masks and the use of contactless thermometers to take the temperature of all staff as they check in for a shift.

Mr Pomroy added: "We will return with much smaller teams in our restaurants and as a result will be returning with a limited menu. This will support social distancing in our kitchens, whilst still providing many McDonald’s iconic menu items.

"To reduce the complexities in our kitchens at menu changeover, we will temporarily not be serving breakfast. As we reopen we will explore the ways in which to help our employees safely change over menus and we will reintroduce our breakfast menu as soon as we can.

"When we return it will be different as we all adjust to this new normal. I want to apologise in advance if our first wave of reopened restaurants does not serve your area. Rest assured, we are working hard to reopen more restaurants, but I am adamant this must be at the right pace with the wellbeing of our employees, suppliers and customers front of mind.

"Slowly, but safely we will return to towns and cities across the UK and Ireland and thank you for your continued support as we work through this crisis."
