Boat fire on River Medway in Maidstone treated as arson

Police are investigating a suspected arson after a small boat caught fire on the River Medway.

Kent Fire and Rescue Service was called to The Broadway in Maidstone at 11.50pm last night.

The blaze, on what witnesses described as a motor cruiser worth £150,000, was safely extinguished by fire crews and police officers were not required to attend.

Three fire engines were sent to the scene and crews used compressed air foam and hose reel jets to tackle the blaze.

No casualties were reported.

The cause of the fire is believed to be suspicious and inquiries to establish the full circumstances are ongoing.

The fire service has been contacted for comment.
