Car fire in Willington Street, Maidstone, may have been arson

A mystery car fire is thought to have been started deliberately

Firefighters were called to a Land Rover ablaze in Willington Street, Maidstone on Saturday night just before 10pm.

The fire sparked allegations on social media that the vehicle had been causing traffic jams because of where it had been parked.

Firefighters were called at 9.51pm and stayed at the scene for about 30 minutes.

Police also attended and say that an enquiry into the circumstances of the fire are now underway.

A spokesman for Kent Fire and Rescue Service said: "One fire engine attended and crews wearing breathing apparatus extinguished the flames using hose reel jet.

"No injuries were reported. It’s believed the fire was started deliberately."

As the car was taped-off this morning, residents took to social media claiming it had been parked causing traffic issues in the area. One claimed it had been set alight by a petrol bomb.
