Maidstone Bierkeller bar faces backlash over Facebook joke

A popular town centre bar has been criticised after posting a controversial joke about dyslexic people on social media.

The Bavarian beer hall themed Bierkeller in Bank Street, Maidstone, posted the contentious quip on Facebook this morning, sparking backlash in the comments.

The joke, based around the changing of the clocks, sets up by saying: "bad news for dyslexic people on the 28th of October," before making a play-on-words of the phrase 'your clocks go back.'

Other users have branded the post as "discrimination" and "disgusting."

One said: "For a business to put this in the public domain is disgusting. The guy doing the facebook posts needs to go back to dishing out burgers."

Another posted: "This is a venue that’s supposed to encourage all sorts of people to go to it so that’s why it’s bad taste to be honest."

Some were more obviously personally offended by the reference to dyslexia.

One user commented: "Having a dyslexic daughter, that's really not funny. Would you poke fun at someone with a physical disability?"

However, others thought the joke was just a bit of fun and some other users were overreacting.

"Why are people so soft on here, it's only a joke" read one comment.

Another said: "A day without banter is a day wasted and some people can be too touchy".

The post was deleted after being on the bar's page for just over two hours.

The Bierkeller Maidstone has been approached for comment.
