Mourning after death of Judith Tucker in Maidstone block fire

A community is mourning the loss of a much loved woman who tragically died in a fire in a housing block.

Judith Tucker was killed after flames and smoke engulfed her home at Walshaw House in Quarry Square, Maidstone on Wednesday, December 19.

Despite brave attempts by neighbours to rescue the disabled pensioner, she could not be saved.

According to neighbours, Mrs Tucker had undergone a leg amputation around four years ago and would have been unable to escape the fire on her own.

Residents of the estate and people who knew her have left bouquets of flowers, as well as cards, and a framed memorial outside her home.

Others have placed Christmas decorations on her porch.

One card left at the scene said: "Jude, you were always such a lovely, funny lady. You would help anyone, we are so shocked. You are now with your Dave again."

Another note said: "We didn't know you but God bless you and your family at this sad time. Going to miss you Jude, sorry I couldn't do more."

A framed picture of an angel with a message reading: "Jude, rest in peace, love from everyone at Quarry Square" has also been placed in front of the flowers.

Others have taken to the internet to express their shock and sadness at the news.

"My condolences go to the family, friends, and neighbours of the Lady who died in the fire. A traumatic and horrifying experience for anyone to go through," said one commenter.

"So, so sad, literally round the corner from where I live. Thoughts are with family and friends," said another.

As well as Mrs Tucker's death, six people were treated for smoke inhalation while a pregnant woman and her son were rescued for the blaze by a stranger amidst the chaos.

Residents of the block were evacuated but many have since returned to their homes.

An investigation is still underway to determine the cause of the fire.
