Nick Elsden, general manager at Arriva in Maidstone said: "It's a great leap forward in technology for Arriva.

"No longer have you got to search around for change for a bus ticket, or get on the bus with a £20 note, you can now get on and pay by card.

"It's going to improve journey times, it's going to make things more reliable, hopefully it will bring more passengers to us as well.

"We go live on Sunday, January 20, it's going to be rolled out across Kent and Surrey over the next few weeks.

"By the end of February, you'll be able to buy a contactless bus ticket anywhere in Kent."

Cllr Martin Cox, leader of Maidstone Borough Council said: "People won't have to carry change, Arriva won't have to bank all of the change and it will probably be a lot quicker as you get onto the bus."

Arriva's contactless payment system will be available across Swale, Sheppey, Dartford and Gravesend from Sunday, January 27.
