M20 lanes closed between Junction 5 for Blue Bell Hill and Junction 4 for Leybourne after crash

A man had to be rescued and taken to hospital after a crash involving a car and a lorry on the M20, which has led to delays of up to an hour.

Two lanes were closed following the accident on London-bound side of the road between Junction 5 for Blue Bell Hill and Junction 4 for Leybourne at around 5.20am.

It resulted in queues stretching back to Junction 7 for the bottom of Detling Hill, which has had a knock-on effect on the A249.

Traffic has also built up on the A20, through Wouldham heading towards Snodland as drivers tried to avoid the M20.

Police and at least three fire engines were called at 5.52am.

Highways officials said all lanes reopened at 7.40am and delays eventually cleared just before 9am.

A police spokesman said: "The South East Coast Ambulance Service and the Kent Fire and Rescue Service also attended.

"Two of the lanes were closed while work was ongoing to release a man from the car who was then taken to a local hospital as a precaution."

Firefighters confirmed they had to cut a man out and remove him through the car roof.
