Train services have been delayed this morning after power had to be switched off so fire crews could tackle a blaze near the track at Maidstone West.

The smouldering rubbish was discovered near the line at just after 7am.

The power was turned off while crews extinguished it, but has remained off while Network Rail crews check the line has not been damaged and is safe to reopen.

A Southeastern spokesman said some trains were delayed and passengers should check before they travel.

It led to delays of up to 40 minutes on trains between Tonbridge and Strood.

Network Rail said it expected to reopen the line by around 10.30am.

The cause of the fire is not yet known.

There was also congestion in the centre of Maidstone for those who had opted to go by car, when a lorry broke down on the main roundabout at Fairmeadow, blocking one lane and partially blocking a second.
