Maidstone: Fire at former Granada cinema in Lower Stone Street

Fire crews are tackling a blaze at a derelict cinema in Maidstone.

Three fire engines and a height vehicle were called to the old Granada building in Lower Stone Street at around 4.30pm.

The Gala bingo hall beneath the cinema has been safely evacuated and no injuries have been reported.

A witness who was driving through Maidstone at the time of the incident reported heavy traffic, with four fire engines blocking part of the road.

A police spokeswoman said: "Police were made aware of smoke at a premise on Lower Stone Street, Maidstone at approximately 4.35pm.

"Officers are currently at the scene with crews from the Kent Fire and Rescue Service."
