Maidstone ex-offenders and vulnerable adults face uncertain future

A group of supported tenants are facing an uncertain future after being asked to leave a town centre home.

Ex-offenders and vulnerable adults have lived at 2 Boxley Road for about two years, but have been issued with eviction notices.

The house was initially run by UK Resettlement – a social enterprise specifically catering to rehoming those in need of support.

Since the charity’s lease on the 13-bed property expired, residents have been asked to leave.

David Walker has been living there for the past 12 months, since a relationship breakdown led to him becoming homeless.

The 31-year-old became a stand-in careworker for residents.

He said: “I don’t want to see any more of the lads leave, I have no idea what will happen if some of us have to go back to the streets.

After the lease ended, Albert Barnes, chief executive of UK Resettlement, said: “I want to be able to help the guys out and move them to another property, unfortunately, it’s become a financial matter.”

A spokesman for Maidstone Borough Council said: “The council provides housing advice to a range of people facing housing difficulties.

“The occupants from 2 Boxley Road are able to access that advice through the normal channels.”
