Fight steps up to save office jobs

Campaigners have stepped up their fight to prevent the closure of 39 regional DVLA offices.

The Public and Commercial Services Union (PCS) invited politicians to a drop-in briefing at the House of Commons on Wednesday to discuss the proposed cuts.

The DVLA office in Maidstone is one of those threatened with closure.

A total of 22 staff could lose their jobs, at the Queen Anne Road site if plans to modernise the service get the go-ahead.

They are among 1,200 workers facing the axe across the country.

The hHouse of Commons showdown follows a day of protest by England and Wales DVLA transport staff on February 14.

According to the DVLA the cuts would save an estimated £28m when plans for the closures were announced in December.

A public consultation on the proposal is due to end on Tuesday, March 20.
